My Great-Grandpa James Aoki was once able to tell me the story about how he was sitting by himself in Kakaako Waterfront Park on December 7, 1941. He was just out for a normal day in the park. He was just sitting on one of the park benches with his radio when suddenly he heard very loud and unusual noises. He was so scared and confused on what was going on. He heard these noises for quite sometime. He knew immediately it was a good idea to turn on the radio to find out what was going on. Come to find out, the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor, which at that time was one of the main U.S. navy bases.
Passing stories and experiences down through generations is important. Now that my Great-Grandpa Aoki has passed, I will still remember the day that I sat down with him in his house and asked him about his experiences being alive in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I will be able to tell my children someday that their Great-Great-Grandpa was able to experience the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

ReplyDeleteIt's great to have a personal connection to historical events. You can't replace those stories.
