Freedom Writers

Freedom Writers, has always been one of my favorite movies, however, now that I am older, I am able to appreciate it more because I can fully comprehend what is going on in the movie.  The students initially are in walled-communities as each has it's own group of friends which happen to all be of the same racial back ground.  The scene where Mrs. Gruwell walks out of the classroom and witnesses what may be considered a riot is a perfect example of this, each racial group was fighting one another.  The CRT tenet number three is a big part of this movie.

When Mrs. Gruwell plays "The Line Game", the students put aside their racial differences and see that they are not so different from one another from their taste in music, movies, and into the deeper subjects of drugs, and losing a number of their friends due to gang violence.  One of my favorite scenes from the movie is the scene when Marcus (African-American) and Ben (white) run into each other, each with their group of friends, and shake hands.  Their respective friend groups, just stare at one another as if thinking, "What the heck is going on?"  This shows how the walled-communities have been brought down between the ethnic groups at least for the students of Mrs. Gruwell's class.

CRT number five and six, are demonstrated when Mrs. Grwuell has her class put together their Freedom Writers Diary, I believe it was Eva that says, "She told us we have something to say to people.  We weren't just kids in a class anymore.  We weren't just kids in a class anymore.  We were writers with our own voices, our own stories.  And even if nobody else read it, the book would be something to leave behind that said we were here, this is what happened, we mattered.  Even if it was just to each other.  And we won't forget."  Each person had their own story, unique from anyone else and Mrs. Gruwell thought that her students should "had something to say to people."  No matter how many times I watch this movie, I am always inspired at how the students are able to overcome adversity and make something of themselves even when nobody expected them to do so.
