Beetle on a String
When I was reading this, I felt a little sad. It seemed as though this was a lonely child. To be taught how to tie beetles on a string, then to be lulled sleep by the sound of them trying to break free is a really sobering thought. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but it didn't seem like he had many friends, and that he was very alone. I don't assume all immigrant children grew up this way, but nonetheless, it must have been a common experience for these children, especially when they first arrived to America to feel this sense of loneliness.
