Are Asian-Indians Caucasians?
I was surprised to find that Asian-Indians are Caucasians because I had always thought that Caucasians were just European white people. But after some research I found that the characterization of Caucasians depends on a person's ancestral origins and skull/facial features, not skin color. On pages 298-299 of Takaki the citizenship of the Asian Indians, who are technically considered Caucasian, was discussed. The case of U.S. v Bhagat Singh Thind the Supreme Court ruled that "Asian Indians were ineligible to naturalization" (Takaki 299) because despite their biological race, they were not "white" and therefore not eligible. They rationalized that decision by stating that according to the Founding Fathers, citizenship should only be for white people. I think that this is a perfect example of the CRT tenet number three that states race is a social not a biological concept. Biologically the Asian Indians should have been eligible for citizenship, but socially the government made that decision racialize that group of people.
