Clay Walls Reflection
The most interesting thing I took from Ronyoung's Clay Walls was not about the Korean American experience or the deep rooted racism and negative attitude towards the Japanese. I found myself relating a lot to Faye's experience when she went to Jane's house. Usually when reading literature, I try to separate myself from the work and delve into the author or narrator's own experience and try to understand their point of view before then coming back to myself. In this story however, I found myself thinking of instances in my past where I have gone to other people's houses and being in a state of culture shock from how they live their lives and what traditions they carry. I think that by having this in common with Faye and by identifying this first rather than after the read through I was able to understand a point that Ronyoung wanted to get across in the excerpt. She is making a statement on CRT Tenet 1 - Racism is Ordinary. It is not just about the Korean perspective on Japanese culture or about Faye's double consciousness. It is about how everyone experiences this type of culture shock when going to other people's homes and entering in on their cultures.
