I had very conflicting emotions after reading mask dance; I was
furious how the children acted towards their parents, especially Carl although I
also felt very understanding. I was upset about the fact that the children
seemed so ungrateful about what their “parents” had done for them. Though not knowing what their lives would
have been still living in Korea, the parents of Carl, Lisa and Karen wanted to
bring them to a “home” where they would be loved and taken care of to the
fullest. I believe that the mother and father in the story “Mask Dance” tried
to create a double consciousness for their children, they wanted to uphold
their children’s cultures and roots without letting the American culture take
over where they came from. The children did not recognize this as pushed away
their Korean culture. In the children’s case, they would not open to their
Korean counterparts and became confused and problematic. I feel as though one must
explore themselves to be fully complete, even when it can be troublesome.
Michelle,
ReplyDeleteAs a parent, I agree w/ you, but the play helps me to see that we can't teach double consciousness--that you have to experience yourself.
