So, like all of you I am sure, I have sat through my fair share of boring history classes. Well, maybe I'm the only one who thought they were boring... but maybe not... either way. I have been through a lot of history, both world and US in my schooling career. I wouldn't really count this class as a history class, but it definitely has a lot of history and things to talk about.
So one thing that I have found that is really interesting about this class in particular is the fact that we are learning about Asians, in America... and we get to hear about THEIR experiences. SURPRISE! What did I think I would get from an Asian-American class? well I don't know but I guess it wasn't this. So looking back on some of my history classes, mostly the AP History class that I took my junior year in high school... I started to see just how twisted the education system is with what it does, and doesn't mention in the history of America... In this class, an AP class, an AP US History class, we were supposed to learn all of the ins and outs of the US from when it all started in "14-hundred 92 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Now, I'm not claiming that I remember everything from this class... I got a 3 on the exam (I passed! yeah!) and that was right after studying tirelessly for too long. So there may be a thing or two that has slipped my memory. But for the most part, I don't remember once talking about Asians and their story in American history. Sure we talked about slavery and the blacks being brought from Africa to America in order to have them work in the cotton fields of the south. We learned about WWI, WWII, and all the stuff up until president Obama's first election. Not to mention EVERYTHING in between. If any of you have taken an AP History class of any kind, you know what I'm talking about, if not, I guess I will just hate Mr. Cadman forever. But only once in this mad dash through the United State's history do I remember talking about Asians in America. The ONLY thing that we learned about, the ONLY THING, were the internment camps. Executive order 9066. That is the only thing. Even then, it was only mentioned as something we "might need to remember." I'm pretty sure that it wasn't even something that could be on the AP test itself, just more of a half-ass mention from our teacher. We learned about European immigrants, but never once a mention to all of the Asiatic people who immigrated here THROUGHOUT this nation's history.
So yeah... look back at all of your history classes and think, did you ever hear about any Asian-Americans? Immigrants or otherwise? I know that I sure didn't, and maybe I'm a special case, maybe I didn't pay 100% attention or don't remember.... but I'm almost certain that I will not be the only one in this class that has had the same experience.
Lucas,
ReplyDeleteNice post. It does make you think about AP classes and AP tests and what they ALL cover or miss.
