When we were watching Freedom Writers on Netflix in our dorm,
many of our friends who were not even in our class came and watched it with us.
A few of them have seen this movie and said it was a great movie. It was my
first watching it and I really enjoyed it. It was really educational, inspirational
and touching. It not only related to many of the CRT tenets, but also helped me
develop better idea about racism
The most obvious CRT tenets that
applied to this movie were number 5 “everyone has a complex and compound identity”
and number 6 “everyone has a unique story to tell and to contribute to U.S.
history.” Through the dailies, Ms.Gruwell got to know each student and their
unique stories. I was surprised that most of the students wanted Ms.G to read
their dailies. In the beginning, everyone in Ms. Gruwell’s Freshman English didn't
respect her. But after Ms.G’s continuously attempted to get to know her
students and treated them like her family, they started to accept Ms.G. Ms.G
helped and guided those “students who can’t learn” to find their value to live.
She encouraged them to put all their dailies together, not to publish, but for
those students to know their values.
Another thing that caught my attention was when the Hispanic/Mexican
girl (I am not sure her ethnicity) decided to tell the truth in the court room,
rather than protect her own people. Her mother and her people were all angry at
her and call her a traitor. But she knows she did the right thing and she will
always have Ms.G by her side. I thought it was amazing how big of change Ms.G brought to each and everyone of the student's life.
Jackie,
