What Makes an American
Coming to the end of this course I still have one question: what makes an American? We talk about the Asian immigrants assimilating into "American" culture and how the "Americans" did not accept the Asians because they were different than themselves. However, since the "Americans" were are talking about are not the Native Americans, they are all immigrants and therefore all have their own unique identities and heritage. Yet, they seem to ban together and discriminate against other immigrant groups because they come from a different continent. Since the majority of "Americans" are immigrants, shouldn't they be accepting of other immigrants instead of fighting against one another for superiority? I just never really understood why some people who call themselves "Americans" are so intolerant of other "Americans" who look or sound different than themselves since both can trace their family history back to an origin other than the United States.
