Here's a brief history of my mom's side of the family:

My Great Grandpa Yeung grew up in China in the late 1800's and went to college there. He became a Christian minister during the Double Ten Revolution, which was led by Dr. Sun Yat Sen. Many colleges throughout China supported Sun Yat Sen and his idea to establish a republic. My Great Grandpa helped carry messages for him by sewing them in his clothing so that if he was stopped by soldiers they could not find it. Not once was he caught, otherwise he would have been in prison or executed for treason. Sun Yat Sen became the first president and founding father of the Republic of China and is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China. After the revolution, my great grandpa was the minister of several parishes. First, he had one in China, then another one in Canada. Then he went back to China and finally became the second minister of one of the first Chinese Presbyterian churches in the New York Chinatown for 30 years.

This church had a lot of history. Sun Yat Sen was housed by the first minister as a sojourner. This church supported many Chinese immigrants that cane over during the 1930's to work in Chinatown for a living and send money back to their families. My great grandma was the surrogate mom for many children and teenagers who had no family or friends. They would all attend church and my great grandma would cook for them at times. She was so revered that when the kids grew up and had families they would come back and visit her.

My other Great Grandpa Kwan was a very wealthy business man and a pimp, having a wife and 6 concubines. He bought each of them their own houses to live in with the money he earned from all the hotels and casinos he owned in Macao. However, he eventually lost a lot of money during the Depression and had to sell all of his property. He later sent his two main sons to college, one was sent to a university in England and another in the US. My Grandpa Kwan in the US was best freinds with Gernal Li's daughter. General Li was a general of southern China who fought with Chiang Kai Shek to preserve Nationalist China during the war against communism. He later became the vice president under Chiang, but it did not last very long when the Communists won.

My Grandpa and Grandma Kwan had my mom and my aunt who were both born in the Bronx and grew up in Miami. Even though they were born in the United States, they did not become citizens until the mid 1950's. My mom still remembers studying the citizenship books when she was a teenager.

  1. Lucas,
You have some family history. How did you find Whitworth? Is it the Presby connection?
