The film Freedom Writers was not only a very inspirational movie but one that showed a lot of the social implications of race. In the beginning, the teacher Mrs. Gruwell seemed to take a color blindness approach to teaching the diverse class she was assigned to. However, she soon learned that this approach was neglecting the backgrounds and stories of the students. Each and everyone of them had extremely complex and compound identities, which of course is CRT tenet five. Once she decided to let the students tell her about themselves through the diaries their relationships completely changed. After this dramatic change there was still people who did not understand and did not want to understand what Mrs. Gruwell was trying to do. Mrs. Campbell seemed to be a prime example of differential racialization. She viewed the students of color as people who had no potential and were not worth putting the time and effort into trying to teach them. She was eventually proved wrong by Mrs. Gruwell when she persistently and creatively got the students to start taking advantage of their potential. Overall, the film did an amazing job portraying the broadening and inspirational story. So inspirational that I nearly changed my major to teaching. . . almost!

  1. Jason,
Make sure you look up "differential racialization" again.
