Other than the movie Dead Poets Society, Freedom Writers was officially one of the two favorite movies that my English teacher showed us in high school. I loved watching Freedom Writers before and I loved it even more the second time. (I cried a lot while watching it the second time) I think that this movie is amazing and hit home to me for many reasons. I think that it is so touching how this movie is based off a true story of how a teacher can be so influential on their students and promote racial integration.
This movie is a great example of the CRT tenet that states, “every group has a unique story to tell, to contribute to U.S. history.” It was important that each student tell their story about all of their experiences, what is important to them, and what they hope their future will be like. Many of the students did not think that they would have a future or get any where in life before they met "Ms. G.” Ms. G was able to bring all the students she had together in a common place (her classroom) and set aside all of their differences and become “a family.” I thought that the exercise that Ms. G did with her students in which they all stood on the line if the phrase related to them or happened to them. Many of the students related to each other and were similar in that they all had a friend or multiple friends that were killed in gang violence and hate crimes. I thought that this was a good exercise that she did because it helped show each of her students that no matter what race or ethnicity they were similar and all had to through similar hardships no matter what race or ethnicity they were.
Sophia,
ReplyDeleteGood post. Glad you like the movie. It took place in Long Beach, where I'm from.
